Maybe Calories Aren’t The Problem. High protein or low protein? No fat or low fat? Complex carb or no carbs? And the questions and confusion continue to build. We all know someone who says that they eat hardly anything at all and yet can’t lose any weight. We knowingly nod, commensurate and think within ourselves, “Yea, and what you do eat is probably all ice cream!” But what about those people who have a clean diet, eat the proper amounts of balanced calories and yet remain overweight despite their best efforts? These belong to a group that is increasing in number daily. These are the people with some type of hormone imbalance.
But what about those people who have a clean diet, eat the proper amounts of balanced calories and yet remain overweight despite their best efforts?
Now the important question is, “which hormones?” That is where the investigation begins. It will typically be more than one hormone, as they are all interconnected. Typically for women it will involve estrogen in some way and for men, testosterone. But it can switch up. This is where labs are essential. Assessing the adrenal glands, the gonads, and the pituitary is essential. Being able to correlate and interpret what the lab says is essential. Somewhere in those numbers is the secret to unlocking the metabolic lock that has created the conundrum of low calories and no weight loss. Once the key is turned in the lock correctly, the magic begins.

Now, don’t be fooled into thinking that it is just a question of giving women estrogen and men testosterone. If it were that simple, and some will sell you that method if you are willing to pay for it, the problem would have been resolved long ago. No, it takes some understanding of the hormones, reading between the lines, and knowing how to bring the body into balance on its own terms to be successful. But once that happens, the weight starts to come off, the brain turns back on, and energy begins to once again flow through the mind/body the way it was intended.
I can’t tell you what percentage of dieters fall into this category but if you are one who has tried everything or know someone else who has, it may well be worth the small effort to be assessed. All it takes are a few labs, a little time and effort and a willingness to be honest with yourself to make it happen.
